Gavin set the binoculars down. The empty house Nathan had located wasn’t ideal, but with magnification he could see Bristol’s house. They’d been waiting here since leaving Bristol’s house this afternoon.

The owners of the empty house, Gloria and Steven Erickson, were out of town. They’d forgotten to hold their mail. The overflowing box had hinted they’d been gone awhile.

Nathan had bypassed the security system in less than four minutes.

Gavin would like to be a little nearer to Bristol’s house, but they couldn’t be choosy. “Place is dark. Bedroom light has been off for twenty minutes. I think they’re down for the night.”

Nathan scanned his phone. “There’s nothing on the downstairs cameras.”

Maya nodded. “They’re either asleep or he’s screwing the reporter. Either way, they won’t be leaving.”

The reporter, Kat Phillips, was on their target list. She’d chosen to align herself with the Ashland group and become collateral damage.

Nathan crossed to the bedroom window they were using for observation. “Wish I could have gotten a camera into the bedroom. Darn cleaning lady watched me like a hawk.”

“You could have taken her out and dumped the body,” Maya suggested.

“We’re making this look like a gas leak accident.” Nathan scrunched up his face, disgruntled. “You’re too blood thirsty, Maya. A missing cleaning woman would draw suspicion.”

“Enough with the bickering,” Gavin snapped. “Pack and clean up.”

They’d all worn gloves while in the house, but you couldn’t be too careful. Gavin had been bred for caution.

Their equipment was stored in the back of the van. Nathan added reflective tape that obfuscated the license plate. If anyone noticed the van and took the license plate number, it would be wrong.

Maya sat in the passenger seat, a wireless transmitter in her lap. Her finger caressed the button.

During the day, Nathan and Maya had impersonated Ashe’s gas provider. It had been easy to get the right shirts and add a magnetic logo to their rented van. When they’d driven up with the report of a potential gas leak, the security guard had let them through the gate.

Instead, Maya had created the gas leak.

“Will the gas buildup be strong enough?” Gavin asked.

“It’ll work. In case it’s not enough, I dropped a propane tank with a half-opened valve near the ignition point. Most of the materials will burn or explode. No one will suspect a thing. A grill tank shouldn’t make anyone think twice.” Maya’s eyes were bright as Gavin started the van. He drove slowly through the neighborhood.

“After tonight, we’ll have two down and two to go.” Excitement filled Nathan’s voice.

As they slowly drove in front of Bristol’s house, Maya pushed the button. “There’s a ten second delay. Go! Go! Go!”
